How do you treat diaper rashes in babies?

Find out how to handle diaper rash and prevent flare-ups. Your little one’s bottom will thank you!

When does diaper rash occur?

You keep a dirty or wet diaper on your baby’s sensitive skin for too long.

The diaper itself irritates or rubs against the skin of your baby.

Your baby gets a yeast infection

Your baby gets a bacterial infection

Your baby has an allergic reaction to their diaper

Babies get diaper rash more often when they:

  • Get older – especially between 9 and 12 months old
  • Sleep in dirty diapers
  • Tummy aches
  • Begin consuming solid foods
  • Are taking antibiotics, or if you take antibiotics and are nursing

Diaper Rash Treatment Tips

These basic steps can help prevent diaper rash:

  • Before and after each diaper change, wash your hands.
  • As soon as your baby’s diaper becomes soiled or moist, change it right away.
  • Simply use water. Use a gentle cleaner to remove excrement from your baby’s skin.
  • Instead of rubbing, gently pat the area to make it clean and dry.
  • If you use wipes, pick gentle ones. Avoid those with fragrances. Use a fresh, soft washcloth instead.
  • Be sure the area is completely clean and dry before putting on a fresh diaper.
  • Use Baby Rash Care Powder. Keep it away from your baby’s face. Place it in your hand, then apply it to the diaper area.
  • Let your baby go diaper-free as much as you can. Skin heals faster when the diaper zone is aired out. To avoid a mess, do it right after a bowel movement.

When to Call the Doctor about Diaper Rash

  • Let your baby’s doctor know if:
  • The rash gets more severe or doesn’t respond to treatment in 2-3 days
  • Your baby has a fever or seems sluggish
  • You see yellow, fluid-filled bumps (pustules) and honey-colored crusty areas. This might be a bacterial infection that requires antibiotics.
  • You notice symptoms of a yeast infection:
  • Skin rash with swollen red spots and white scales
  • Small red pimples outside the diaper area
  • Seeing redness in the folds of your baby’s skin
  • Your pediatrician can prescribe an antifungal medicine to clear it up.
